The European Parliament has approved a new "duty of care" directive, requiring companies to prevent human rights and environmental abuses in their operations. Companies must draw up and publish due diligence plans to prevent risks, and member states must provide detailed information on due diligence obligations and designate supervisory authorities to investigate and sanction companies for non-compliance. This measure follows on from scandals such as Rana Plaza in Bangladesh, and aims to improve working conditions among the subcontractors of major European companies.
